Taal Volcano, has been called the smallest active volcano in the world. It is located in the southern part of Luzon in the Philippines. It is about 50km from the capital, Manila. Right in the center of the island is the main crater that holds a sulfuric lake. It is famous for having an island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island in the Pacific Ocean. What makes Taal Volcano more unique is the fact that the volcano itself has a lake of its own inside its crater which is called the "Crater Lake." One can even swim inside the Crater Lake but don't stay too long because the lake's water is a much diluted form of sulfuric acid with high concentration of boron, magnesium, aluminum and sodium in salt form. The first recorded scuba dive inside the crater was made by a team led by Thomas Hargrove in 1986 to a depth of about 20 meters or 60 feet. There is even a tiny island in the Crater Lake which Hargrove's team also explored.
For Your SAFETY
1) The months of December, January, and February, are said to be windy that it’s just too dangerous for bancas to get to the landing spot. On those days bancas are not allowed to run.
2) There are "guides" on the crater rim, who urge tourists to trek down to the Crater Lake with them for an "extra fee". Don't do it. It,s dangerous, and it will cost you an arm and a leg in "extra charges" that you will find out only when you finish. Just take the "secret trail". It goes to the same place, it’s avoids the slippery and dangerous part of the trek. Other than that, it,s the same trail, and it costs a lot less.
Monitoring:
1. Seismic monitoring (number of volcanic quakes and tremors)
2. Visual observations
3. Ground deformation (EDM, precise leveling, tilt)
4. Main Crater Lake chemistry, temperature and level
